First Post

Anthony Shackell -

This is a first post for the Spotified Project that breaks down three key components of the multimedia company Spotify: their predictive algorithms for generating playlists and suggesting music to listeners, their compression methods for maximizing audio quality while minimizing bandwidth consumption, and their business model that allows them to thrive in a climate that is hard for multimedia organizations. This is important because Spotify is part of the wave of streaming services that are changing the face of the music industry as we know it.
I have previously seen Spotify’s publication of their algorithms, but I have not explored them in depth, and have been meaning to for ages. This is the perfect opportunity to do so. In addition, I will be able to learn about the specific compression methods that they use and exactly how they operate, and the business model of a company instrumental in the modern multimedia industry.
My deliverable will take the form of a report only, that explores the three main areas I have outlined above. I will not be presenting my findings or coding anything, but I am happy to share my report with other people when it is done. Over 4 weeks, I will research one topic per week, and then in the final week I will write the report. This gives the following timeline: June 4th - Algorithms research and notes, June 11th - Compression methods for streaming research and notes, June 18th - business model notes and writeup, June 25th - Final Report.
